Every patient who goes under the knife is at risk for crazy complications during or after surgery which could ultimately result in death. And as crazy as that is, it’s even crazier to find out that Selena was in a situation that could have resulted in her death immediately following her kidney transplant last summer.
Sel’s best friend and kidney donor, Francia Raisa, opened up to W magazine about the scary moment she realized Selena could have died shortly after their joint procedure. Francia talked about how their recovery post-surgery and explained that things could’ve taken a turn for the worse for Selena.
She said QUOTE, “Recovery was hard. I didn’t want to eat, I didn’t want to drink anything. Selena did have a complication, too. A few hours after our surgery, I woke up and had a text from her that said, ‘I’m really scared.’ My kidney was very active, and when she turned, she broke an artery. They had to take her into emergency surgery and get a vein from her leg and build a new artery to keep my kidney place. She could have died.”
Thankfully her doctors acted quickly after the scary situation and saved Selena’s life.
Francia went on to explain why it took so long for herself and Selena to share their story with the public. She explained, “We didn’t want to tell anybody because recovery was very hard for us, and we went through a depression at the time. We kind of just wanted to be normal and not have that attention on us. I really left it up to her.”
But before all of this crazy information was revealed, some fans noticed the scar on Selena’s right inner thigh during a couple of public outings and quickly assumed she unluckily got her period without knowing. But, as it turns out, it was actually a scar from a life-saving emergency surgery.
