Kim Kardashian found herself in hot water once again after wearing Fulani Braids to the MTV Awards this past weekend. Many called her out for cultural appropriation and now she’s speaking up about it.
At the launch of the KKW Beauty and Fragrance pop-up store, Kim spoke to Bustle about why she decided to wear the braids, saying QUOTE «I actually didn’t see backlash. I actually did that look because North said she wanted braids and asked if I would do them with her. So we braided her hair and then we braided my hair.”
Though she didn’t necessarily apologize, Kim did add QUOTE “In no way am I ever trying to disrespect someone’s culture by wearing braids. If anything, my daughter was so excited to see me get matching braids with her. When we did her hair in these braids, she was so excited.»
As you may know, this isn’t the first time Kim’s received criticism like this. During the same interview, she actually spoke of the last time this happened, saying QUOTE «I [do] remember the backlash when I had the blonde hair and that I called them ‘Bo Derek braids.’ But I obviously know they’re called fulani braids and I know the origin of where they came from and I’m totally respectful of that. I’m not tone deaf to where I don’t get it. I do get it,»
But right now I want to turn it over to you guys. What do you guys think of Kim’s response? Let me know all your thoughts and feelings down in the comments below. 1. I knew this was coming. It’s hair. It’s not cultural appropriation, it’s cultural appreciation. I don’t get mad every time a black person wears a top hat or whenever a non-irish person uses St Patrick’s Day as an excuse to get drunk ?

  2. I think she did it on purpose. Oh please North is rockin straightened hair…biotch please ?. The Kanye thing, saving the black lady from prison…she knew why she wore the braids… White women can wear braids but I don’t trust Kim’s reasoning, it’s not for style or fashion, this double agent has reasons behind it trust me. ?

  3. What the hell, hair is hair!! So what of us who are wigs and weaves?? From Brazil or India. People need to chill and deal with real issues. ?
