“Beauty and the Beast” is getting a modern makeover in more ways than one–including its characters’ backstories!

According to director Bill Condon, Gaston’s main sidekick, LeFou, played by Josh Gad, has an updated and socially progressive subplot in the upcoming live action flick. Bill told Attitude Magazine QUOTE, “LeFou is somebody who on one day wants to be Gaston and on another day wants to kiss Gaston. He’s confused about what he wants. It’s somebody who’s just realizing that he has these feelings.” He also went on to praise Josh’s portrayal of the character, adding QUOTE, «…Josh makes something really subtle and delicious out of it. And that’s what has its payoff at the end, which I don’t want to give away. But it is a nice, exclusively gay moment in a Disney movie.»

Woah guys, this is a huge deal! Attitude’s editor-in-chief Matt Cain explained why it’s such an exciting move by Disney, saying QUOTE, “By representing same-sex attraction in this short but explicitly gay scene, the studio is sending out a message that this is normal and natural—and this is a message that will be heard in every country of the world, even countries where it’s still socially unacceptable or even illegal to be gay…It’s a step in the right direction and I applaud Disney for being brave enough to make it—and in doing so hopefully helping to change attitudes and bring about real social progress.» We couldn’t have said it better ourselves!

As for Josh, he tweeted QUOTE, “Beyond proud of this” when a fan asked him to confirm if the rumors that his LeFou is indeed going to be gay in the film. So if you needed just one more reason to love him, there you go!

And speaking of Josh’s role in the film, Disney released a clip of LeFou singing his iconic song “Gaston”, where he boasts about why Gaston is so worthy of admiration and is so much better than everyone else in the village…

Okay so it’s actually not a stretch to portray LaFou as having a crush on Gaston–this song pretty much sums it all up! Also, can we all just take a minute to appreciate those giant sideburns on Josh?! And his amazing musical talents, of course! Can it just be March 17th, already! Seriously, enough with these teasers, Disney–we’re ready to see the whole thing!
